Behind the process of an Ad

There are so many steps to each advertisement out there.. From the concept to the creation, by the time I get to the set, many months of research, development and testing have already gone on.

I was booked for day #2 of a shoot for Samsung. day #1 was the face gal. They shot with me for a few hours holding the camera up to my face with my hair slicked back and in a few different tops. After they got several shots the client liked they combined the face gals pic with mine and that got them to the shot they had visualized. :)

I am very excited to share some pics by one of my favorite artist photographers, Tom Chambers. His work is compelling and intriguing. I can still remember the first image I ever saw from his collection, it was a little red haired girl with a greyish stripe across her eyes in a black & white dress with a dolls head on fire.. He showed it to me 10? years ago and the images has never left me. It is so hauntingly beautiful. So I had been wanting to work with him for years, yearning to make it to one of his canvases. & finally on a freezing cold day, he had me leap about barefoot in the street and stand on tip toe and cuddle carpets in my old prom dress.

Coffee, Lattes and Espresso – they have always had a warm, mystical lure for me. Watching my parents cradle their cups in the morning, peeking into cafes with people relaxing in overstuffed couches sipping foamy treats. And the smell!! That smell that makes me feel cozy and wonderful.

I should be a coffee fanatic with my all-nighters as a theatre major in college and my penchant for overnight drives home to surprise my mom and friends in VA. I want to love it. But I don't. I dislike that taste even more than Buckley's cough syrup (which will get rid of a cough but tastes like death.)

I've only had three sips of coffee ever. Once when I was a child and my dad gave me a sip, I gagged and can remember being so taken aback by a taste from something that looked and smelled so wonderful. I had the same reaction in college when I was given a taste by a friend at 4am when we were frantically trying to get all the finishing touches done on the stage – same reaction.. *ack* *ack* Nooooooooo, not for me.

And then again, most recently when I was working on a shoot for Breville. The shoot was non-stop esspressos – the smells were amazing. There was coffee everywhere and for 14 hours I basked in the scents. Towards my 13^th hour, I was called to do a shot where I would create a Snowman in the espresso. The Baristas started the design and I finished it up, which called for using a stick to make the buttonholes. To do this, I had to insert the stick into the foam to create the first button and then lick the stick clean for the next one (licking the stick was the fastest way to get it ready). It all smelled so wonderful that I knew I would just love it. I stuck that stick in and pulled it out leaving a perfect circle behind and stuck it in my mouth and *ack*! Same Reaction. I was again just so taken aback by my sheer dislike of something that I want to like. *Sigh* I finished the Snowman's buttons and got it in the first take, thus saving me having to have that 4th taste. I drank some hot chocolate and cleared my taste buds and decided that I would just live with loving the smell. Cuz that smell is delicious enough.

Scotch Fur Fighter

3M has done it again! They knocked my socks off and have saved all the walls in this apartment with the Command Strips

I have pretty much everything in this apartment up with those wonderful devices, they work great for everything from hanging pictures to hanging hooks for heavy winter coats, plus they are a breeze to take down and move! Leaving NO HOLES behind. I loce them.. so I was very excited to lend a hand on another 3M Product - the Scotch Fur Fighter.

I'll admit, I had an ulterior motive when I went to set that day.... I wanted to know how these things worked! You see, when I moved up to NYC I had to leave my cat behind with my mom. When I finally got an apartment where I could have Sortia (my kitty) well, that was when I found out that my mom had catnapped her! She had fallen in love with her though she was heavily against all the cat hair that now covered her favorite chair. Duct tape was pretty much the only thing that worked and that was quite a project to make work.. time, effort & a lot of duct tape for a clean chair up until Sortia would leap back into HER chair.
So I was very excited to see if there was finally going to be a product out on the market that could help!

When it came time to demonstrate the product on shoot day, you could feel every person on set leaning in to get a closer look. Would it work? Would it clear a line on the fur covered sofa? Action was called and I did the sweep and could hear the excited gasps from all around - IT WORKED! There was a completely clean streak going down the center of the cushion. ALL the hair was up. I flipped the product over and there was all the hair, nice and neatly stuck to the pad. WOW. WOW. Everything was reset and we did it again and it worked again and again. I had no problems in picking up any fur that was in the path of the Fur Fighter.

After the successful day, I was anxious to get down to VA to surprise my mom. Sadly I could not seem to get a photo of her favorite chair that showed how covered it was in cat hair. Her chair is brown and it would just not show the hair in any of the pics that I took. She has been complaining for YEARS about how she has lost her favorite chair to my cat. Every time she sits in it..she gets covered. So I called her into her room and pointed out her chair to which she gave a disgusted grunt and said 'cat hair, hrmph!' I then pulled out the FF and she raised one eyebrow (i wish i was talented enough to do that) and grunted and said 'yeah, nothing works, you can try.' She sighed, being very dramatic, and crossed her arms and stood waiting to be disappointed. I did one swipe and suddenly she perked up, she peered down and ran her finger across the chair where I had just swiped. She grabbed the FF out of my hands and looked at the bottom of it. She looked at her chair again. She looked at the FF again. Then in a very VERY quiet voice she said 'It's a miracle' and then she stood silently in awe. My mother NEVER stands silently in awe. So YEAH! Thank you 3M for giving me the opportunity to learn about the FF so I could impress my mother. You have made her a very happy woman. She called me the other day to tell me she was sitting in her chair in BLACK pants - That hasn't happened since she catnapped my baby 5 years ago.

My mom also found that my cat loves to be brushed the FF J giggle

I'm back in college.. well, in print anyways! I got a hysterical text message the other day from my roommate wondering if I was stalking her - apparently I was staring at her from her Majority Minority textbook in one of her classes. She snapped a pic and sent it to me and sure enough there I was on the page of her book.
HA! I had forgotten about these photos. Back when I first started modeling after college I had done a stock photo shoot and as it is with those types of shoots never knew if anything had happened with the photos. Well, they surfaced again in my roomies textbook. Giggle.

back in my blond days. :) I'm the gal with my hands crossed over my knees in the front row. My roommate said the blond hair threw her off for a moment though when she looked closely at the hands, she knew it was me. giggle.

Ah yes, I've finally done it. One of the blue liquid shots :) For this shot we had to pour, dab and then wring the pad. I worked with another fantastic hand model, Kara (she and I sometimes get paired because our hands are similar in size and coloring.) Everything had to be done at exactly the same time, in the same way. She and I would kick butt at a mirroring exercise, giggle.

I had the "Hero" product (the Poise pad) and she was with the competitors brand. I had to compete with the camera for space (it started on my side) and do all the actions with my left hand. I'm a rightie though in this business, you've gotta be able to perform with either hand.

Lightning Bugs & a new Veramyst ad

The weather is perfect. Ideal, beautiful. I love NYC in the 70's. I love open windows. & I love getting surprised by a lightning bug flashing up right in front of my computer screen as the internet page loads and there is my hand in an advertisement on the side panal!

A Boogie Turns into a Booking

One morning my roommate woke up with a very sad face and asked me to "Get Down in Full Effect" to brighten her morning. At first, I wasn't sure what she was asking so she pleadingly asked again "Please, Please Get Down in Full Effect." I can not turn away from one in need so up to my feet; I leaped and proceeded to Get Down in Full Effect. I shimmied, I cabbage patched, I robot-ed, I twisted, on and on. I even did the elephant (a very obscure, little known dance!)

After just a few minutes she was smiling and I was inspired to keep rocking away and after 5 minutes she was laughing and after 10 minutes she was joining in for an impromptu dance in the living room. It was hysterical and a wonderful way to start the morning.
Shortly after I left for New Jersey to shoot a commercial for Snuggle. I had no idea what I was going to be doing as they booked me directly from my headshot for a young mom type of role. When I walked into the studio, they directed me to the mark on the floor and gave me the direction to do my happy dance. I started laughing and asked if that could also mean for me to Get Down in Full Effect, my roommates phrase was loved by all and they said YES YES!

The music started blaring and I started shaking and bopping.
By the time I finished, everyone (including myself) was crying from laughing so hard and then it was time to go again. Good thing I had gotten warmed up that morning! What a fun day

Hand Model InStyle April 08'

YEAH!!! The Hand Modeling shots that were supposed to be in the March issue of InStyle showed up in April’s! I was very excited to find the mag today after being sorely dissapointed that the shots were not used after that endless though very fun (cuz the people were great) day on set.. I think I got out of there around 10pm at night after starting at 9am!!! Good thing I was working with such wonderful peeps and I am very excited with the end result. I’m loving these shots! The photographer came over and said he was going to call me The Sniper from now on. The Sniper? um..... Quizzically, I glanced up from my under my arms (I was positioned with my elbows on a rest and hands up holding the product and my head bowed way down? The Sniper?? Um?

He laughed and said "You are The Sniper because you can hold your hands so steady and you always get the shot!"

Just caught the Poise spot on TV!! The commercial starts with some gals out doing some shopping and the adventure turns to giggles when one dresses up in this pink boa sweatery thing -- heh heh.. thank goodness for Poise

I was down in the Battery Park area a month or so ago and had a lovely surprise sighting of a Hamilton Beach display outside of Century 21!!!! I was heading to the Staten Island Ferry for a ride with a friend and found myself staring up at my hands in the large window display. quite a fun moment :)

The end of the summer was fantastic with a few trips out to LA :) and I am still amazed that it is almost HALLOWEEN!!! Time flies. I've gotten to work with so many wonderful people in so many interesting places over the past few months and consider myself so fortunate to be able to lend a hand on so many fantastic projects.

Keep an eye out for tv spots for Poise, Veramyst, Cranium & Oil of Olay where you can find me pouring, spraying, playing & lotioning. Looking forward to sharing the tears and spots as I find copies.

love the Target campaigns. They are so active and just darn fun AND I got to be a part of one. One of the hands reaching and grabbing the little 10 calorie chips ahoy cookies. It was a fun day hanging with Christina and Keisha, 2 of the other hand gals. The energy on the set was phenomenal. I think it had a lot to do because of the DJ that was spinning the entire day. I was about to go ask what amazing radio station had been found when I walked around a curtain and saw the whole setup. YES YES YES. GREAT.

so keep an eye out for the spot. I just saw it. There is a gal singing "hello goodbye" the beatles tune with lots of stuff going on. red red red, target circles everywhere. we are holding cookies in our palms and then we close around the cookies and flip our hands and pull them out of view. It is a fast one, I've only caught it once. I'm excited to be a part of the campaign.

Got a text from my dear friend Nancy yesterday saying that she had seen one of the Axe Bodyspray commercials that have me spraying the can at the end! YAH! She saw it on MTV so with my new found cable tv, I flipped to the channel and kept it on as background while I did some work!! Within 2 hours I saw the spot and it is hysterical. Has a really cute girl doing the "Bom Chickie Bom Bom" little dance towards a guy who, of course, has the becoming scent of Axe on him. After her little vocal dance, the shot goes to a black screen with the can of axe and I twist the top and give it a spray If anyone has TEVO capabilities and can capture this spot, I'd love LOVE love to have a copy!!!

The lovely editor from First magazine sent me an advance copy of the March 5th issue with the jean story. Apparently I am the perfect oval butt :) There was also the Circle Butt girl and the Flat Butt girl. :) and they know how to find the jeans to rock the shapes. I am always early for shoots. I would rather be way early than 3 minutes late. When I have a shoot outside of NYC that I am driving to, I usually allow myself an extra hour for travel time. I have had people ask why I allow so much extra time. Well....that extra time saved me this week.
On Wed. I had a shoot in upstate NYC and allowed myself an extra hour and a half to get there. Good thing.
I woke up bright and early and headed to my car AND it wouldn't start. No apparent reason. The ticking sound lead me to believe it was either my battery or my starter or a combo of both (which is odd as I just had a new battery put in back in November.) So there I was sitting in my car on that cold morning wondering what I would do.
I called my friend Jessica, one of the few people that I know that also has a car here in the city. She actually answered the phone at that horrible hour and very graciously agreed to let me borrow her car. I grabbed my stuff and called a car service and headed to Queens to meet her.
Her car got me to the shoot with 20 minutes to spare! I had called the agent right away to let her know what what happening and I kept updating her during the drive, I thought I would be 15 minutes late.
and (ha ha) no I was not speeding.
Jessica - you are a life saver. Thank you so much for trusting me with your vehicle. I really appreciate it and hope you found the present I left for you.

The shoot went great and the clients never knew the panic I felt that morning.

I had a delectable audition for Axe Bodyspray earlier in the week. The studio just smelled so inviting, the appeal of the scent. I walked in and started wondering why I was finding myself looking around for my best friend when I know he is down in VA. He seemed to be everywhere and then I stepped onset and realized with the first spray of the can that he must be an Axe man.
The audition was fairly easy...simply spray the bottle with the left hand. Sounds easy enough, doesn't it. Well, it wasn't. It was so hard that I got a text later in the day from another hand model asking if I had as much trouble as she did. And I did. It was hard to do. Odd how small daily things that we do without even thinking about it can be so difficult to do for film. It had to be a smooth action with no shaking or looking like there was any strain.
I wasn't completely pleased with my performance but I smiled and laughed and kept on going with what the director wanted me to do. and then I went home and got ready for the shoot that I had the next day.
Tuesday I shot the new campaign for Entity Beauty. It was a great challenging shoot. The art director wasn't sure what the final layouts would look like so they just wanted to capture a lot of different hand positions. and we did 700 different shots. One hand, two hand, this way and that. It was fun to be given the freedom to be creative instead of just pointing to the on/off switch or holding the coffee cup.

The client for Entity Beauty is also a very famous manicurist and nail art specialist. He has won the World's Nail Art Championships 8 times. & he is an incredibly hyterical and wonderful person. I really enjoyed his company and loved the interaction between the photographer, myself & him. He would say wonderful things like 'grrr baby be the lion' to inspire a position or suddenly - 'delicate, delicate, catch the waterdrops'

I was sad that I would have to take these off to replace with the natural color that I always wear. Then I got booked on the Axe commercial halfway through the shoot and stopped caring about having to remove the cool polish.
I was a little nervous heading to the commercial shoot on Thursday, remembering how hard it had been to push the spray button down. I was in luck as they had one of my favorite prop riggers on set. Peter makes things so manageable and doable. I am always more relaxed when I see him. The shot would be me twisting the top of the bottle and spraying with my left hand while holding the bottem of the can with my right. And we would be doing that with 12 different types of the bodyspray.
12!!!! 12!!!!! 12 different commercials.
I went to set thinking I was only shooting one commercial. I called my agent to confirm and yes it was 12 different spots. and the new spots for the Axe Bodyspray products are hilarious. I got a sneak peek before we started filming. I can't wait till they are on the air.

HB & Appearex

I headed out of NYC last week for a go-see in Philly on Thursday. The casting was really quick, just in - snap a pic - and out! and I was on my way south. I had a shoot for Hamilton Beach on Friday and was excited to get to Virginia at a decent hour so that I could stop in and surprise some friends.
We were shooting a bunch of blenders and an iron on Friday and they also had another box on hand for me to check out! I had not seen this one in the stores yet...keep an eye out!!

The following Monday, I continued south to Winston Salem to shoot the latest campaign for Appearex. I am really excited about this shoot because this time they have decided to use more than just my hands!!! They used all of me for the shoot and the pictures look great. I can't wait to get copies.

The last shot of the day was of me being a tourist taking photos. They really liked my camera and wanted to use it for the shoot. No problem..makes it easier for me to 'pretend' that I am taking pics :P

Work always cancels out Vacations

I was all set on Oct 26th for my trip to LA. My flight was to leave at 8am on Friday...as usual, I got a call about a job. I had gotten a few calls for editorial type shoots for the week that I was to be in LA and my agent and I agreed that they were not worth canceling the trip....now, though, ... this job.. this job was worth it! Another TV spot for Degree! :) I love this client and adore the production studio where they always shoot. So it was an easy decision to cancel the flight. Turned out to be a good thing as I also booked two other jobs during the week that I would have been gone.

The shoot for Degree went GREAT! There were 3 other hand models there to be the forearm gals. I was the deoderant roller :) The shoot went really well, we got all the rolling done before lunch and then the other gals had the dream hand model job..the job that most people think the job is always like (it NEVER is) They climbed up into this 'bed' and just laid there listening to their ipods with their arm stretched out over a green screen. They had to lay there for long periods as it was a time elapsed shot. I think those models can go down on record for having the easiest day on set EVER.

The shoot was a lot of fun and full of great people. The production house and the clients were so nice and helpful. They really made my job easy. The hardest part was the extreme heat..the lights, the grills..whew.. talk about working in the desert. though a happy desert. I did wear my shades for a few shots as the lights were blinding.
The director, Andy, is amazing. Really relaxed and confident and his demeanor really created a postivie, low stress atmosphere on set. That really helps to get the shots quickly. YEAH!
This commercial will be really hand heavy too, yah! Lots of shots, lots of different things cooking on the fabulous grill. I want one!!!

3M Command Strips on the air NOW

I've heard rumors that the 3M Command Strips commercial that I shot last month is on the air right NOW. My friend Nancy has allready seen it 3 times. I haven't seen it once (yet!)
I am really excited to have been able to lend a hand for such an amazing product. I wish that these had been on the market years ago. They would have saved me every security deposit from every apartment that I have ever rented. If they had been around when I was little, my mom would have let me actually hang things on my bedroom walls!!!
Better late then NEVER so what are you waiting for? Go get some of 3M's fabulous products.
The Command Strips allow you to hang practically anything on your walls and then..when you decide you want to take them down they come off cleanly leaving no damage to the walls. They have strips for posters that will come cleanly off both the walls AND the posters. They have hooks that will hold a lot of weight. I was dropping a 5 pound weight onto the hook and it did not budge, not one little bit.
My apartment has transformed thanks to these fabulous little strips.
I highly recommend this product.

Going to the gym does have its perks. I was flipping through the Oct. 2 issue of Us Weekly and found the Let Freedom Ring campaign that I did for NuvaRing. I knew that it would start appearing in national magazines in the fall, I just had not considered that it was fall. Times does go speeding by.

Recently I've had some amazing experiences where I let my hands take a break and got my vocal chords in on some action. I voiced a few characters in Power People, America's first superhero machinima comedy feature film!! It was fun to play the extremes going from evil supervillians to the heroic good guys.

I worked on a great food story for the May issue of Angeleno Magazine. The magazine is a subsidiary of Modern Luxury Publications and can be found in stores in LA and on a limited basis around the rest of the country. I'm crossing my fingers that my LA LA friends are able to find a copy. There are some really fun shots with lobsters, truffles and the most delicious cheese that I have ever experienced.

I just spotted the commercial I worked on for Campbell's Soups!! You can catch me popping open the top of the soup can. The spot is called "Mmmm Mmmm Delicious."

& the other day I caught a glimpse of the JellO "10 Calorie Dessert" spot where I twirl a bit of a brownie on a toothpick and scoop up an itty bitty amount of icecream to show just how little you get for 10 calories. I'm excited that they are re-playing the spot.

The Kraft Dessert Sundae commercial is running in all markets. I had a great time shooting this spot. It was wonderful to get to work with director Vittorio Sacco again. The spot is called "Pigtails" and you can check out my fingers peeling back the top of the delicious pudding cup while a very pretty brunette girl licks her spoon in enjoyment (she was really nice too!)

I had a really neat moment driving through Harrisonburg, VA where I went to college at James Madison University. As I was leaving town after visiting with some of the fabulous professors, I drove past a truck loading station and there were my hands on about 100 trucks. I shot this product up north and had always wondered where the ads ended up!! A lot of truck drivers are taking my hand modeling skills to the highways!
